What is Kogei?
Kogei (工芸) — literally "craft" or "industrial arts" — refers to Japan's traditional craftsmanship spanning ceramics, textiles, lacquerware, metalwork, woodwork, and more. These are not mere objects but embodiments of philosophy, skill passed through generations, and deep respect for natural materials.
In 1950, Japan established the Important Intangible Cultural Properties system to recognize and protect master craftspeople — the Living National Treasures — ensuring their knowledge endures.
